Computer very slow: checks to try first
A computer that has become very slow often has a simple cause: it has not been restarted for weeks, too many programs start with it, or the disk is full.
Quick checks
- Save your work and choose Restart, not Shut down. Restart clears memory fully on modern Windows.
- Press Ctrl, Shift and Esc together to open Task Manager. Sort by CPU, Memory and Disk to see what is using the most.
- Close programs and browser tabs you are not using. Dozens of open tabs use a lot of memory.
- In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable programs you do not need to start automatically.
Housekeeping
- Check free space on the C: drive in File Explorer. If it is nearly full, empty the Recycle Bin and use Storage settings to clear temporary files.
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, and install waiting updates. Restart when asked.
- Run a full scan with your antivirus. Malware can slow a computer down a great deal.
- Remove programs you no longer use from Settings, then Apps.
When it is the hardware
If the disk shows 100% use in Task Manager for long periods, the computer may have an older hard drive. Replacing it with a solid state drive (SSD) usually makes a large difference. Too little memory has a similar effect. A laptop that gets hot and loud may have blocked air vents, so keep it on a hard surface. Sudden slowness with clicking noises or error messages can mean a failing drive: back up your files straight away.
