Forgotten Microsoft 365 password: how to get back in
With a work or school Microsoft 365 account, how you reset a forgotten password depends on how your organisation has set things up. There are two routes.
Try self-service reset first
- Go to the Microsoft sign-in page, type your email address and click Next.
- On the password screen, click Forgot my password.
- Follow the steps to prove it is you, usually with a code sent to your phone or another email address, or with the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Choose a new password, then sign in again on your phone and other devices with the new password.
If self-service reset is not set up
If you see a message that you cannot reset your own password, your organisation has not switched on self-service reset or you have not registered your phone or other details. Only an administrator can help now.
- Contact the person or company that manages your Microsoft 365 accounts.
- They can set a temporary password for you in the Microsoft 365 admin centre.
- Sign in with the temporary password and choose a new one when asked.
If you have a new phone
If you sign in with the Authenticator app or a text code and you have replaced or lost your phone, you will not be able to complete the check. Your administrator can reset your sign-in methods so you can register the new phone.
Avoid it next time
- Register your mobile number and the Authenticator app as security info, so you can reset your own password.
- Use a long passphrase you can remember, rather than a short password you have to write down.
- Never send your password by email or give it to someone who phones you. Nobody genuine needs it.
